To a large extent, the media can have a damaging effect on audiences, as shown through George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory. Gerbner argues that long-term exposure to media, particularly television, cultivates a distorted view of reality. For example, repeated exposure to violence can create “mean world syndrome”, where audiences believe society is more dangerous than it actually is. This suggests audiences may become more fearful, anxious and influenced by negative stereotypes presented in the media. However, the theory can be criticised for assuming audiences are passive, as modern audiences may actively interpret and challenge media messages rather than simply accepting them.
